Cusco Restaurants

Cicciolina
Address: Calle Triunfo 393, 2nd Floor. (through the courtyard, up the stairs and around to the left) Tel: 239510

Nicely decorated, Spanish / Italian / Mediterranean cuisine with an Andean feel, beautifully presented. Nice atmosphere, sophisticated. Separate bar menu includes tapas. A little on the expensive side but  good value. Owned by Tammy Gordon from Melbourne Australia who is often on hand to check the dishes meet with her very high standards of quality and presentation. Go on treat yourself. Recommended. Reservations are a must May to September.

MAP Café (Museo de Arte Pre-Colombino)
Address: Plaza de las Nazarenas 3231

Andean Nouvelle cuisine at its best located in a "glass house" inside a nice courtyard inside the Pre-Columbian Art Museum. Probably the best restaurant in town but with a very limited menu.

Casa Mayor

Address: Portal de Carnes 236, 2nf floor, Plaza de Armas

Great food, portions maybe a little small for some. Probably the best view over the Plaza de Armas. Ideal for a romantic night

Fallen Angel
Address: Plazoleta Nazarenas 221. Tel: 258184

Arty decor, tables of thick glass over fish-filled bathtubs, sofas with rubber pillows, surreal atmosphere. Gay-friendly restaurant but not too intimidating for the "straight guy!". Expensive dishes with the emphasis on presentation rather than quantity but a little disappointing. Well worth a visit just for the funky setting.

Inka Grill

Address: Portal de Panes 115, Plaza de Armas. Tel: 262992

Inca Grill offers the some of the best "nuevo Andino" food in town and although expensive I think you'll think it's worth it. The menu includes a wide range of typical and international dishes including vegetarian dishes. Elegant folk shows are put on each evening. Can get a bit crowded and noisy with many tour groups eating here. Service is quick with the aim of getting you out of the door as quickly as possible so it's not a great place if you want to eat your meal and then chat over a bottle of wine all night. Highly recommended by South American Handbook. Reservations are a good idea. Open Mon-Sat 10am-12am, Sun 12pm-12am

A Mi Manera
Address: Calle Triunfo 393, 2nd Floor
Tel: 222119

Swiss managed restaurant combining typical local foods with international cuisine (NovoAndino). Recently refurbished. Nice interior design with a spotlessly clean open kitchen. Friendly relaxed atmosphere, well recommended.

Illary Restaurant (Andean/International)

Inside the Hotel Monasterio, Calle Palacios 136, Plazoleta Nazarenas, Cusco. Tel: 241777

Great food in an old converted monastery. Good presentation. Main courses for about US$25. Great atmosphere and service worth treating yourself to. Not rushed. Candlelit dinner, ideal for that romantic evening out.

La Quinta Eulalia (Andean)
Choquechaca 384 (about 2/3rds of the way up the street on the right), Tel: 224951

If you want to experience a real Cusqueñan restaurant pay a visit to La Quinta Eulalia. It has outdoor seating, nice flower-filled patio and terraces, local dishes including guinea pig (served whole!), roast pork, filled peppers, hen soup, traditional music and home brewed chicha all at a local price. Great place to eat on a sunny day. Full of locals celebrating birthdays and special occasions so you know the food must be good. An experience you'll remember. Get there early for Sunday lunch as it fills up quickly. Open only for lunch 11am-5pm

Pachapapa
Address: Plazoleta San Blas 120. Tel: 241318

Located in a pretty, open courtyard just of the Plaza in San Blas opposite the church. Pleasant sunny setting during the day, can be a bit chilly at night although gas patio heaters are provided. Bring a warm jacket and enjoy the stars! If it is too cold or raining there is a small inside restaurant. Pachapapa offers a large selection of local Peruvian food cooked on an open wood stove (well some of it anyway). Dishes include cuy (guinea pig), trout, alpaca, lomo saltado (stir-fired beef) and rice, quinoa soup, aji de gallina, pork stewed in chicha (corn beer) as well as pizzas

Manu Cafe
Address: Av. Pardo 1046
Friendly service, relaxed atmosphere with plenty of natural light and plants.

Baco
Address: Ruinas 465. Tel: 242808

Same owner as the highly recommended Cicciolina.

Los Perros Wine & Couch Bar

Address: Calle Tecsecocha 426, Tel: 241447

Relaxing place to hangout, filled with interesting local artwork which changes on a regular basis. As the name suggests there are plenty of comfy sofas, board games, magazines in a relaxing, non-rushed atmosphere. The music is mainly jazz and chillout. The food is excellent and portions are large. Tasty Asian salads, curries, tangy chicken baguettes, homemade lemonade with fresh mint, good coffee. This is the place to recover from a hangover!

Granja Heidi

Address: Cuesta San Blas 525. Tel: 238383
Very clean with spotless toilets. Granja Heidi (Heidi's Farm) offers fresh, nutritious meals as well as wholesome breakfasts. They also have a great 4 course set meal at lunchtime for US$6. Spacious with plenty of natural light. Becoming very popular so it is a good idea to book a table in the evenings. Good selection of vegetarian meals including delicious stuffed peppers, crepes, cheesecake. Also serves a good steak with homemade spaetzle (German pasta), and chicken with Peruvian sauces. Not a great variety of dishes but good size portions and excellent value. Highly recommended

Jack´s Café
Corner of Cuesta San Blas and Choquechaca. Good selection of snacks and dishes, well presented. Nice decor, relaxed atmosphere. Great English full breakfast served all day. Other dishes include houmus and ciabatta bread, French fries and guacamole, Jack's antipasto (selection of yummy things), veggie burgers and home-made soups. Excellent coffee. Often queues outside of the restaurant !!! The quality of the food is a little disappointing though and generally feels as if it has been prepared off-premises and re-heated mainly due to having the smallest kitchen in Cusco!! However the size of the portions makes up for it and the dishes are good value. The owner also runs Paddy Flaherty´s Irish Pub offering superior quality freshly cooked bar food.

Greens Organic

Address: Santa Catalina Angosta 135, 2nd floor (enter through the door to the right of Incanto restaurant)

Large selection of vegetarian dishes including Thai curry, tofu and vegetable stir fry and pastas. Recently introduced non-vegetarian meals including smoked leg of lamb served in a hot pepper sauce, garlic and lemon crusted rack of lamb (recommended), chicken curry and aji de gallina. Excellent salad bar. Spacious restaurant, timber beams, good service.

Kusikuy (Andean/International)
Address: Suecia 339. Tel:292870

(Quechua for happy guinea pig!) excellent place to try out typical Peruvian dishes including the house speciality 'cuy al horno' (baked guinea pig) which emerges from the oven amidst the flashing of cameras and squeals of delight or disgust. Cuy is much cheaper here than in other more touristy restaurants around the Plaza de Armas. Also serves alpaca and trout. Good service. Nothing fancy but friendly and authentic.

Incafe
Address: Choquechaca 131-A

Small restaurant with a good selection of main courses and sandwiches. Good value especially at mid-day when they offer a set meal for about US$4. Friendly service.

Incanto
Address: Santa Catalina Angosta 135

Fairly new, contemporary Italian restaurant just off the main Plaza de Armas. Large selection of Italian food, pastas, pizzas, steak and grilled meats, trout. Large wine list. Popular with tour groups. Large restaurant, white-washed walls, a bit cold and lacking in atmosphere. Fairly expensive.

Al Grano (Asian)
Address: Santa Catalina Ancha 398. Tel: 228032

Delicious Asian food, vegetarian curries, yogurt with cucumber, peanut sauce, non of which is too spicy. Good coffee. Prices are modest especially the great-value daily set menu. Open Mon-Sat 10am-9pm

Macondo
Address: Cuesta San Blas 571. Tel: 229415

Same owners as the expensive Fallen Angel restaurant, although the food served in Macondo's is slightly more affordable. Good mixture of International and Novo Andino cuisine, alpaca steaks and tasty vegetable curry.

Tunupa
Address: Portal Confituras 233, Plaza de Armas

Popular with tour groups, great view over the Plaza de Armas if you arrive early. A la carte menu or buffet. International and Andean dishes. Good service.
